To make matters worse, the valve was periodically adjusted to a half-closed or even fully closed position, further intensifying the high-CO₂, low-oxygen conditions inside the dead space. Normally, even for Xiaoyu, it would be impossible to endure such an environment for long. However, the terrifying part is that whenever she reached her limit, I squeezed the rebreather bag, reducing the volume of the dead space, allowing her to expel some CO₂ and take in a minimal amount of oxygen—just enough to keep her consciousness from slipping away. But this comes at a cost: the squeezed bag became the bottleneck of the entire airflow system. To overcome the resistance, Xiaoyu must inhale with strong force. While the hypoxia was somewhat alleviated, the physical and mental exhaustion only grew more intense… Time had finally reached the pre-set thirty minutes—of course, Xiaoyu had no sense of time—and I closed the valve on the rebreather bag for the last time. Then I watched as Xiaoyu, completely unaware and with her consciousness already blurred for a long while, enacted her final struggle. After only a few dozen seconds of prolonged oxygen deprivation, her consciousness slipped into a dark abyss… Interview after several hours of rest: —Me: Have you recovered? —Xiaoyu: More or less… My temples still hurt a bit… —Me: Then, first, can you describe your overall feelings about this experience? —Xiaoyu: Extreme suffering, absolute torment… One word: Brutal! —Me: When the bag was first attached, how uncomfortable was it? Well, it supposed to be a strenuous aerobics, but apparently for hooded Xiaoyu this became anaerobic. She can’t keep doing it for long and halfway of both attempts she collapsed on the ground. In the first time she can still remove the hood by herself, but in the second time she was so dizzy that she just lay on the ground gasping for the stale air inside the hood and didn’t know what to do to save herself. I had to remove the hood for her. The second breathplay hood is nontransparent and has a bigger air bag but also no breathing hole. Xiaoyu was wearing this one in the second scene. She was asked to find a pair of scissors with her wrapped fists. She tried twice. Although the hood is bigger and she can stay much longer, it was still a difficult task as she can’t see or use her fingers freely. Can she succeed? The last scene is classic. Xiaoyu was bound, sitting on a chair and rebreathing the air inside the hoods until she reached her limit. She wore the big hood once and the small one four times. In this part of the video you can realize how tight the small hood is: When she was gasping for air, you can see how the hood expanded like a balloon when she breathed out, and also how the air bag was sucked deep inside her mouth when she tried to breathe in. Don’t miss her cute tongue moves! The ending is dramatic. She collapsed again and went to the edge of blackout. It is a video that a swim-cap fun shall never miss. Xiaoyu is under swim caps for more than 22.5 minutes in total in this 31-minute video. For the rest of the time, she is mostly gasping for air… To avoid a swim cap slipping over the hair, two swim caps were used in each attempt: one worn in the normal way over the hair, and then another one over the face for the breathplay. That worked perfectly. The second swim caps never came off her face by themselves during the video. The first two attempts were a warming-up to Xiaoyu. The second swim caps were pulled just over her face and the top of her head. Some hair over her cheeks and under the edge of the swim caps broke the airtightness.
